joint armed forces of washington luncheon

about the joint armed forces of washington luncheon (jafowl):

In 1977, the then-named Naval Officers' Wives Club contacted American humorist, Art Buchwald, and asked him to speak at one of the Club's luncheons. Answering the telephone himself, Mr. Buchwald declined, saying that he had already received too many separate requests from military wives' clubs and couldn't possibly accommodate all of them. However, when asked if he would be willing to speak if all five service branch spouses' clubs sponsored a joint luncheon, Mr. Buchwald stated that he'd be happy to accept the invitation.

This prompted the Naval Officers' Wives Club to contact the presidents of each of the other military officers' wives' clubs in the area with this idea and the Joint Armed Forces Officers' Wives' Luncheon (JAFOWL) became an elegant annual affair attended by influential political leaders such as former First Lady Michelle Obama as well as well-known celebrities alike. In 2015, the JAFOWL acronym was updated to reflect the decades of change and increased diversity within the military officers' spouses' community which is why it is now proudly known as the Joint Armed Forces of Washington Luncheon.

Of the many special benefits of being stationed in or around our nation's capital that make it so unique, being able to attend JAFOWL has been one that has stood the test of time and remains a strong and honored tradition both within the military officers' spouses' community and beyond.
